Weird things that bug me

Why do they call it The Original Chex Party Mix, when it isn't? I mean, there's no way they had little garlic bagel chips when Chex Party Mix recipes were first printed on boxes.

I'm equally suspicious of the inclusion of garlic powder....

It's been bugging me for a while too. Maybe because they claim 'original'. Well, I remember the original and that's not it! Now I'm spending too much time trying to find the real original recipe.

:-) If you ever find the original, let me know. I have one I make now (with no garlic bagel chips, I might add), but I don't think it's really original, either...

THE original Chex Mix
Here's my original recipe for Chex Mix. It
doesn't have some of the spices called for in
the current "original" version on the Chex
cereal box.

1 stick (1/2 C) butter or margarine
1 1/4 t. seasoned salt
4 1/2 t. Worchershire sauce
2 2/3 C. Corn Chex
2 2/3 C. Rice Chex
2 2/3 C. Wheat Chex
1 C. salted mixed nuts

Heat oven to 250. Melt butter in 15x10x2
pan; remove pan from oven. Stir in seasoned
salt and worchestire sauce. Gradually add
cereal and nuts, stirring to coat evenly.
Bake 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
Spread on paper towels to soak up excess oil.
Makes 9 cups. Makes a neat gift during the
holidays, wrapped up in a nice container.

NOTES: My original recipe says to bake at
350 for 20-25 minutes but the oven was too
hot and the butter burned (perhaps the
original recipe actually called for
margarine?) so I used the temperature and
time suggested now on the cereal box. Also,
you can use the mixture of cereal mentioned
above, or 8 cups of any flavor mix. My
friend's mom, in the 60's, included Cheerios
in the cereal and also small pretzel sticks.

Yes, definitely use the cheerios and pretzels (thin little sticks, NOT twists). An interesting take on the subject is also provided in the online SF Examiner:

Ken's receipe from the '60s is better than the one currently published, but the original had no pretzels or Corn Chex (Corn Chex came later). To find the original, I looked for a picture of the back of an old Chex box on the web. I found one, which I can date to 1951-1954. How? It also has an ad for a "Space Patrol" periscope "get yours for only 25 cents". Ralston Purina sponsored the Space Patrol TV show from 1951-1954 (the show ran from September 11, 1950 to February 26, 1955). Here's the very simple receipe from the box:
"Melt 1/2 cup butter in a shallow pan. Stir in 1 tbls. Worchestershire sauce, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. garlic salt (not garlic powder). Add 2 cups Wheat Chex, 2 cup Rice Chex, 1/2 cup nuts (peanuts, pecans or cashews). Mix until all pieces are butter coated. Heat 30 minutes in a 200 degree oven, stiring every 10 minutes. Cool...enjoy!"

No Pretzels?

That's just not right....
